Evaluation Q6. What have you learnt about technologies from the process of constructing this product?

Pre production

While doing this project I have learnt that there is so much different types of technologies needed in order to finish and get everything sorted. For example we had to start with the website 'Blogger'. This is where we share all our work and put it on one blog for the public to see. By using 'Blogger' we were able to put up all of our work to show step by step of how we were slowly getting there into making our film and I made blog posts of our pre production such as story boards in advance so audience are able to get a good idea of what our film was going to be about.

As i was in a group of 2 it made it easier to share work and get it across to each other. We were able to use a Microsoft one drive and use the power point on that. This made it so much easier when we looking for fonts as One drive is on the internet and allows more than one person to both edit in live time which let us work on it at the same time getting fonts which both of us may have liked.

When doing blogs to compare our film to other films we would get stills of films from the website Dropbox. This would allow us all to get pictures ready from the films we have been studying about and put them in our blog posts to speak about.

In order to get a rough idea and inspiration for our film we used popular media source YouTube in order to find relevant films like ours to get an understanding on how we can make ours. This helped us take ideas in order to get the highest marks available.

Production

When making our film we had to use different technologies in order to make it smooth and intriguing to watch. First of all we had to use the obvious which was a 1080P Camera. This allowed us to mess around and try many different shots in order to pick a final shot. The camera had many features also which helped us in making the filming much easier. For example when creating different shots we were able to flip the screen in order to make the filming more comfortable in our hands to see how our shot looked before filming it. The playback feature on our camera let us see everything we had recorded along with all the audio to see what we liked the most.

In order to have all the storage on the camera we used a standard 32GB SD card which meant that it didn't matter if we had any rough cuts on our storage as we had plenty space to make mistakes. Both the products used in this production are affordable and easily accessible allowing many people who are willing to start out on a smaller scale to use this type of equipment along with free software and video sharing websites such as YouTube.

In conclusion for our production, the affordable camera allowed us to do a variety of shots which made our film look interesting and eye catching while allowing us to create many different shots to make the perfect film.

Post Production

Finally, in order to get all our work together we used an editing software called premier pro. This is where we were able to make our film the best it could be by editing it with a range of features for example adding a soundtrack to it which would ass intensity to the film and cause tension.

Our limit for our film was 2 minutes long but as we didn't film as much as we would have wanted we only made our film 1 minute and 30 seconds but it was okay as it was still in the boundaries of the minimum we were allowed.

By having the SD card we were able to slot it into the computer for easy access and put all our cuts onto premier pro to start editing. Premier pro allowed us to go through all the shots we had so even the terrible ones which let us delete them and left us with all the ones we needed. This process had sped up everything as we eventually were left will all the shots we needed in order to make our film. During the editing we learnt new things which we may have never learned before for example adding fonts to the film while it is playing or something simple such as a fade onto the next scene but with the deadline set we were able to play around with the software as we were given a reasonable amount of time to have completed the project.

We also learnt how to add sound beds to our film so if we had two different scenes we were able to go from one season to the other without the sound sounding horrible when transitioning. This can very important for future purposes as sound is the most important part of a film in my opinion.

Overall, the use of premier pro from our previous prelim task gave us basic knowledge on how to use the software but as this project was graded we had to use that previous knowledge and do much more which gave us good and enjoyable experience when creating our films.

Evaluation Q3. What kind of media institution might distribute your product and why?

What cinema would most likely view our film?

As our film is a thriller it would more likely be aimed at a younger audience or a more matured audience. As the audience wont be that big such as a blockbuster film means that  our film would be shown at cinemas such as Cinema city. A reason why it wouldn't be shown at cinemas such as odeon or cineworld is because the box office numbers wont be as high as what cineworld averages and wouldn't make the profit that films such as Harry potter or Twilight makes. A reason also that Cinema city and vue would suit my film is because unlike cineworld there are more films which cater to the older population and as our film is a thriller it will be within the 18+ range. Vue are the third biggest cinema chain in the UK which means that they are very big but they would also show films which arent going to be smashing the box office records for example our film. Cinema city on the other hand would be perfect for our film due to the fact that they work independently. They are owned by Cineworld however do own them. Due to the fact that they are independent it allows people to have a choice in what they watch so by looking at the description of our film they might be more intrigued and would be able to watch it via Cineworld.

What film distribution company would distribute our film?

I think that the company which would distribute my film would be film 4. This is because film 4 are a British company who specialise in British films and low budget films. This would help our thriller as it is a low budget film which hasn't got the wide spread audience compared to blockbuster films. We would keep our film within Britain to start out with a niche audience and then as time goes on we would try and go global. Film 4 have distributed films which have the same genre as ours. Film 4 also produce entertainment on live TV so this could also attract a wider audience for our film. An example of a success story would be the 'Inbetweeners' they started out as a small British film but as it got more popular, Film 4 were able to make the Inbetweeners 2 in Australia which made the film popular there also.

How would digital technologies offer new distribution opportunities?

There are many different websites now which allow people the opportunity to make videos and share them online for other people to view. For example there are big sites such as Youtube and Vimeo where you can upload your own work for free for the public at no cost where as sites such as Netflix offer you blockbuster films at a cost of a monthly or weekly subscription. Youtube in current times has started to change a bit by trying to make it in a sort of TV style website. This is because you can now purchase films at a low cost which allows all people to buy films which they may not have been able to have seen in the past. Youtube is known as the worlds biggest video sharing platform with the most watched video being 'Gangnam style' by PSY with 2.7 billion views. This shows that there can be a massive range of audience no matter what the video is. This gives us hope that our film could also be a success. There are also a range of websites to start small also for example Vimeo and dailymotion. Due to the tags that our film would have, when other people are viewing similar films it may come up on recommended to boost the viewings.
